What is an ATS resume checker?
Short answer: An ATS resume checker simulates how applicant tracking systems read your resume file, then scores how cleanly it parses and how well it follows evidence-based resume best practices.
An applicant tracking system (ATS) is the software employers use to collect, store, and search the resumes they receive. If a system cannot read your file cleanly, the right keywords never get indexed. The Fresume ATS resume checker is genuinely free: upload your resume as a PDF or Word file and you get an instant resume score, a letter grade, and a plain-text “ATS preview” showing what a representative ATS-style parser pulls out of your document. There is no login and no paywall on that core check. Treat the result as a diagnostic that shows you what to fix — not a hiring prediction, an “ATS pass-rate”, or a guaranteed interview.
How does the ATS resume checker score my resume?
Short answer: The score combines two things — how readable your file is to a machine, and how well the content follows resume best practices — into a single 0–100 resume score and letter grade.
The engine works in two parts. First, a parseability pass runs on the raw file using Apache PDFBox — a widely used open-source PDF text-extraction library — to approximate how a real parser reads your text. Second, a set of deterministic content checkers grade your sections: contact details, summary, work-experience structure and content, education, skills, dates, keyword density, readability, and more. Across two planes the checker reviews 17 resume areas in total. The scoring is deterministic — the same resume always gets the same number, with no random or AI variance. Unlike an AI resume checker that can return a slightly different score on every run, Fresume is repeatable, and it renormalizes over only the categories your resume actually has, so you are never penalized for a section you do not need. For a non-English resume, structural and parseability checks still run, and the English-only content checks (action verbs, cliché flags, readability grade) are skipped rather than counted against you. What the checker looks at
Every scan breaks down into five weighted categories — each with its own score, status, and specific recommendations — plus a ranked action list that tells you what to fix first.
Parseability & ATS-readability
File-level analysis on the raw PDF or DOCX that flags anything a parser cannot read, and produces the ATS preview. This part exists only in the file upload.
Impact & evidence
Work-experience bullets — are they quantified with real metrics and led by strong action verbs? Plus keyword density, which flags stuffing rather than rewarding it.
Completeness
Are the essentials present and well-formed: contact info, work-experience structure, education, and a sensible skills list with no duplicates?
Clarity & concision
Summary quality and length, first-person-pronoun overuse, and resume length measured against your experience level.
Consistency & formatting
Optional sections (projects, certificates, awards, languages), standard section titles, location format, and dates an ATS can actually parse — with format consistency offered as polish, not a scored penalty.
A ranked action list
Issues are ranked Critical, Major, then Minor, and paired with prioritized quick wins — so you fix parse-blockers before minor keyword nits.
What is a good ATS resume score?
Short answer: A good score means an ATS can read every section of your resume and the content is complete — quantified, action-verb bullets, standard headings, consistent dates, and no keyword stuffing. Roughly a B and up (70+) is solid, but fixing the specific issues the checker flags matters far more than chasing a particular number. (Relevance to a specific job is a separate in-app matching step, not part of the ATS score.)
People obsess over whether a 70, 73, or 75 is “good”, but a number on its own does not tell you much — a resume can score well and still be wrong for a specific job, or score lower only because of one fixable formatting problem. As a resume grader, Fresume maps your score to fixed A–F grade bands so the number is honest and repeatable:
| Score | Grade | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 92–100 | A+ | Parses cleanly and follows best practices closely — single-column, text-based, complete, quantified. |
| 85–91 | A | Strong; only minor polish left. |
| 70–84 | B | Good — readable and complete, with a few worthwhile fixes. |
| 55–69 | C | Needs work; address the flagged structural and content issues. |
| 40–54 | D | Significant gaps or parse problems. |
| Below 40 | F | Likely unreadable or missing essentials. |
Chasing a 90+ by stuffing keywords or copying a template will not help — the checker actively flags keyword stuffing and hidden text. The reliable path to a higher score is to clear the Critical and Major issues in your report, then tailor the content. When you are ready to rebuild cleanly, start from an ATS resume template and re-scan the finished file.
Is my resume ATS-friendly?
Short answer: Your resume is ATS-friendly when a parser can extract all of your text in the right order. The checker’s parseability pass tells you directly, and shows you the ATS preview so you can literally see what a machine reads.
A resume that looks perfect on screen can still be invisible to a parser. Used as a resume scanner, the checker detects the layout and file problems that quietly break extraction — and because a file the ATS cannot read is the most important thing to know, parseability findings are never paywalled. They are shown free to everyone. Common parse-blockers it flags:
- Image-only or scanned PDFs with no real text layer (flagged, not OCR’d).
- Multi-column or sidebar layouts a linear parser reads out of order.
- Contact details trapped in the page header or footer margin.
- Tables used for layout that get merged or dropped.
- Garbled text layers that display fine but extract as gibberish.
- Non-standard section headings a parser cannot map to a known section.
- Password-protected or encrypted files the parser cannot open.
- Hidden or sub-4pt keyword-stuffing text (flagged with an ethics warning, never advised).
The ATS preview is the plain, top-to-bottom, left-to-right text a naive parser produces — so a scrambled two-column layout is obvious the moment you read it. For a full walkthrough of the formatting choices that keep files readable, see how to make a resume ATS-friendly.
How do I check my resume’s ATS score?
Short answer: Use the free ATS score checker: upload a PDF or Word file, read your score and the ranked issues, then fix the flagged problems and re-scan. No account is required for the core check.
Upload your resume
Go to the checker and drop in a PDF or DOCX. Word files are converted to PDF server-side for consistent parsing, and every upload is virus-scanned. No login needed.
Read your score and the ATS preview
You get an instant score, a letter grade, per-category results, the parseability panel with the ATS preview, and every Critical issue — plus three unlocked sample fixes.
Fix the flagged issues and re-scan
Work top-down: clear parse-blockers and Critical items first, then the quick wins. Update your file and check again to confirm the number moved.
Anonymous results are stored for 24 hours and then auto-deleted — the file, the preview image, and the record are all removed from storage. For a deeper walkthrough of scores and fixes, read the full ATS resume checker guide.
Do ATS systems detect AI?
Short answer: The Fresume checker does not score you on whether your resume was written with AI — it grades structure, evidence, and parseability. AI-detection tools exist but are unreliable, so the useful move is to make every bullet specific, quantified, and true.
Applicant tracking systems are built to parse and rank resumes, not to police how you wrote them. Some newer screening tools advertise AI-detection, but that detection is inconsistent and easy to get wrong, which is why our checker deliberately does not grade it. What actually holds up under human review is concrete evidence: real metrics, strong action verbs, and accomplishments a recruiter can verify. If you draft with AI, edit it into your own specific, honest bullets — generic, repetitive phrasing hurts you with people long before any detector does.
How the free Fresume check compares
Fresume is a genuinely free resume checker — you see your score before any wall. Some scanners make you create an account before you see a score, or hide the readability analysis behind a paywall. Here is what is free with Fresume, alongside patterns you may run into elsewhere.
| What you get | Fresume (free core check) | Some other scanners |
|---|---|---|
| See your score before any wall | Yes — instant, no signup | Sometimes needs an account first |
| Full parseability panel + ATS preview | Free, never paywalled | Sometimes gated or not shown |
| Every Critical structural issue | Shown free | Sometimes gated |
| Deep issue detail & fix instructions | Premium — $17.49/mo, cancel anytime | Paid |
| Job-description matching | In the app after the scan (Premium) | Varies |
When a content issue is locked for free users, the label is honest — “Locked, upgrade to see this” — and you still see its severity, points lost, and where it is. Nothing is blurred or faked. See the full breakdown on pricing.
What you can do after the scan
The scan is the starting point. Inside Fresume you can import the scanned resume into the resume builder and fix the findings directly, or start fresh from an ATS-friendly resume template. Job-specific matching also lives here: the anonymous upload is file-only and does not take a job description, but in the app you can match your resume to a specific posting, get AI rewrites, and re-score. From there you can turn the same resume and role into a targeted cover letter, and autofill applications on Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, Indeed, and LinkedIn with the Chrome extension — all against a platform with 7M+ job records.
ATS resume checker FAQ
01Is a 70, 73, or 75 ATS score good?
Yes — anything from the B band (70+) up is a solid, readable resume. But the exact number matters less than the issues behind it. A good score means an ATS can read every section and the content is complete: quantified, action-verb bullets, standard headings, consistent dates, and no keyword stuffing. Matching to a specific role is a separate in-app step, not part of the ATS score. Focus on clearing the Critical and Major issues in your report rather than chasing a particular figure.
02How do I make my resume ATS-friendly?
Use a single-column, text-based layout with standard section headings, keep contact details in the body (not the header or footer), avoid tables and text boxes for layout, and export a real text PDF rather than a scan or image. Run the free checker to see the ATS preview and confirm your text extracts in the right order, or read our ATS-friendly resume guide for the full rules.
03Do ATS systems detect AI-written resumes?
Applicant tracking systems are built to parse and rank resumes, not to detect how they were written. Some newer tools advertise AI-detection, but it is unreliable, and the Fresume checker deliberately does not grade you on it — it scores structure, evidence, and parseability instead. If you draft with AI, edit it into specific, quantified, truthful bullets that hold up to human review.
04What are red flags on a resume?
The biggest red flag is a file an ATS cannot read — an image-only PDF, a scrambled multi-column layout, or a garbled text layer. After that: missing contact info or essential sections, work-experience bullets with no metrics or weak verbs, keyword stuffing, and dates in a format an ATS cannot parse (seasons like “Fall 2021”, apostrophe years, or free-text). The checker ranks these by severity so you fix the parse-blockers first.
05Is the ATS resume checker free?
The core check is genuinely free with no login: your score, letter grade, percentage, every category result, the full parseability panel with the ATS preview, all Critical issues, and three sample fixes. Premium ($17.49/month, cancel anytime) unlocks the deeper diagnostic text and fix instructions for Major and Minor issues, plus in-app job-description matching, AI rewrites, and Chrome-extension autofill. See pricing for the full breakdown.
06Should I add the job description when I check my resume?
The anonymous file upload is file-only and does not take a job description — it scores parseability and resume quality. Job-description and role matching is a separate step you do inside the app after the scan, where you can compare your resume to a specific posting and see what to add. It is intentionally never folded into the ATS readability score.
07What file type should I upload — PDF or DOCX?
Both work. The checker accepts PDF and DOCX; Word files are converted to PDF server-side for consistent parsing. For best results, export a real text-based PDF rather than a scanned image or a photo of your resume, since image-only files have no text layer for a parser to read.
08How often should I re-check my resume?
Re-check after any significant edit, and whenever you tailor your resume to a new role. Scoring is deterministic, so the same file always returns the same number — which makes it easy to confirm that a change actually improved things rather than just moving text around.
09What are 5 things a resume must have?
Complete contact details (name, valid email, phone, location), clear standard section headings, work experience with quantified action-verb bullets, education, and a focused skills list — all in a clean, parseable format. The checker verifies each of these and tells you which are missing or malformed.
10Is my GPA good enough to put on a resume?
GPA is optional and the checker never requires it. As a rough guide, include it only if it is strong (roughly 3.5+ on a US 4.0 scale, or the equivalent top band in your country’s system) and you are early in your career or a recent graduate; otherwise the space is better spent on quantified achievements. Leaving it off will not lower your score.
